1934 Drysdale Special: American made, unrestored.
This bike belonged to a long time member of the New York based German Bicycle and Sports Club. It was purchased from Alvin Drysdale who, at the time was located on the west side of Manhattan in an area known as Hell's Kitchen. Drysdale freqently built for members of this club. The original owner now lives in Nevada and, as of 2009 was 94 years old. According to him, the bike is original and he does not recall it having been refinished. However, I suspect that, probably after the war, it was repainted and decaled by Drysdale. The wheels which came with the bike dated from the 1950's. As pictured the bike now has the BSA hubs and Lobdell wood rims that would have been appropriate for the time. This would have been a fairly early Drysdale as he did not arrive in New York from his home in California until, I believe, the very late 1920's. While in California he was an accomplished racer winning the state junior championships. He was, for many years a member of the Century Road Club of America, a famous N.J. based club still going strong.
